Shilajit : Nature’s Gift

What is Shilajit?

Shilajit is a mineral found naturally in the Himalayas and Hindu Kush valleys of the Indian subcontinent. It is a rare resin formed by thousands of years of decomposition of plants and plant materials. This trapped plant matter comes out of the rocks and forms a brown to black sticky gum. Shilajit has been used for thousands of years for its health-promoting properties in Ayurveda, the Indian traditional system of medicine. Ayurveda is mentioned in Charakasamhita and Sushrutasamhita, where it is described as “pebbles like gold” and a gelatinous substance. In Ayurveda, Shilajit is called Rasayan, which refers to Shilajit’s benefits in promoting holistic health. Literally, the name Shilajit means “conqueror of the mountain and remover of infirmity”.
Folklore claims that it is very beneficial for both men and women when taken in its pure form.

Health Benefits of Shilajit.
While shilajit has many therapeutic benefits, the most important is that it is known as a health tonic. Let us see some of the benefits of Shilajit in promoting good health.

Helps in weight loss:
Medical studies show that Shilajit contains some active compounds, which help reduce weight and waist circumference by increasing body mass index. Relieves Constipation: Shilajit has some tonic effects on the body, which strengthens the intestinal muscles and helps in digestion and elimination of food from your body by relieving constipation.

Increases sperm count: Shilajit, taken regularly for about one and a half months, has been found to be effective in improving sperm count by increasing follicle stimulating hormone. Relief from mountain problems: Shilajit is a one-stop solution for high altitude problems. Not only does it relieve stress and anxiety, Shilajit is also helpful in reducing lung problems and hypoxia.

Reverses anemia:

Shilajit is a good source of iron, which helps in increasing hemoglobin and red blood cells. Being tonic, it relieves weakness and fatigue in anemic people. Slows down the progression of Alzheimer’s: Research evidence shows that the fulvic acid in Shilajit prevents the accumulation of tau protein in the brain, which is responsible for neurodegeneration and Alzheimer’s elsewhere. However, more studies are needed to confirm this benefit.

Prevents Stomach Ulcers:

Shilajit stops gastric leakage and tightens the lining of the stomach, preventing the formation of ulcers.

In Ayurveda, Shilajit is known for its anti-diabetic properties. Ayurvedic physicians recommend it to diabetics for its effectiveness in reducing diabetes symptoms and drug side effects. Not only this, Shilajit is also recommended by Ayurvedic doctors to reduce the frequency of nocturnal urination, which is a symptom of aging and diabetes. Studies in India suggest that Shilajit, when taken with certain anti-diabetic drugs, is more effective in lowering blood sugar than conventional drugs. However, due to the lack of human studies, diabetics should talk to a doctor before taking any form of shilajit.

Shilajit for Cholesterol:
As per Ayurveda, Shilajit is useful in cholesterol management. Studies suggest that regular intake of 2 grams of Shilajit is very effective in reducing low-density lipoprotein or bad cholesterol, while simultaneously increasing high-density lipoprotein or good cholesterol. It was further suggested that the fulvic acid in Shilajit is responsible for the resin’s hypolipidemic (blood cholesterol lowering) effects. Not only this, Shilajit also contains vitamin C and vitamin E, which are known antioxidants. These antioxidants prevent plaque build-up in the arteries and thereby, reduce the risk of heart disease.

Shilajit for weight loss:
Obesity is emerging as a growing health concern worldwide. Modern culture and lifestyle have made it very important to deal with this problem. In fact, the WHO has called obesity a “global epidemic”. A review article published in the International Journal of Research suggests that an imbalance between oxygen demand and supply in the body’s tissues is a major source of obesity. Not only this, Shilajit is a rich source of fulvic acid, a mineral and iron, which increases red blood cells in the body. Red blood cells are the main carriers of oxygen to the tissues. Therefore, the faster these cells are replaced, the faster they supply oxygen to the fibers.

Several studies have been conducted to test the effects of Shilajit as a supplement in weight loss programs. A study conducted in India examined a group of 70 people and found that taking shilajit significantly reduced weight and decreased abdominal folds, reducing thigh and waist diameters.

In yet another study, Shilajit, given to a group of people with Agnimanth (Clerodendrum flumydis), was found to be helpful in reducing body weight and basal metabolic index. Therefore, it can be safely said that Shilajit is very effective as a weight loss aid.

Shilajit for constipation:
Digestive disorders like constipation are becoming more and more common these days. People with constipation complain of feeling stuck. In some extreme cases, rectal bleeding has also been reported. It can be very difficult for a person to put their finger on the cause of severe constipation, however, it generally depends on their lifestyle, dietary habits and anatomy.

In Ayurveda, Shilajit is considered as an excellent remedy for malignant constipation. A chemical or health tonic, it strengthens the intestinal walls and regulates the peristaltic movements of the intestines (movement of the bowels moving towards the groin). Shilajit also increases the secretion of bile from the liver (liver juice), which helps to moisten and digest food better.*

Shilajit for Stomach Ulcer.
Gastric ulcer is one of the major causes of stomach upset. People under constant stress or taking certain prescribed medications are at increased risk of developing gastric ulcers. Studies claim that Shilajit reduces gastric acid leakage and breaks down the walls of the stomach, thereby protecting the inner lining of the stomach from stomach acids. However, human studies are still ongoing, so it is best to consult an Ayurvedic physician before using Shilajit as a treatment for stomach ulcers.

Shilajit for the heart:
Laboratory studies on model organisms show that Shilajit has dose-dependent effects on blood pressure and heart rate. While shilajit lowers heart rate in lower doses, it has been found to increase lipid levels in higher doses.

However, no human studies have been conducted to support this claim. If suffering from any heart condition, it is best to consult a doctor before taking Shilajit in any form.

Shilajit for anemia:
Anemia is a condition with low levels of hemoglobin and red blood cells. According to Ayurvedic experts, Shilajit is a rich source of iron, which is the most important mineral responsible for blood formation. Animal studies suggest that regular consumption of Shilajit increases the hemoglobin factor and decreases total red blood cells in the body.

Also, Shilajit is an Ayurvedic tonic and rejuvenator. It helps relieve problems like fatigue and weakness, which are commonly associated with anemia. However, these findings are yet to be confirmed in a clinical setting.

Shilajit for hemorrhoids:
Each part of the stomach contains some amount of hemorrhoidal fibers. Conditions such as hemorrhoids or hemorrhoids occur when these fibers become inflamed. Symptoms of hemorrhoidal inflammation include rectal pain, itching, and bleeding during bowel movements. One of the major causes of hemorrhoids is increased pressure on the bowel and rectal area.

In Ayurveda, Shilajit is considered effective in the treatment of piles. Regular intake of Shilajit strengthens the blood vessels and prevents blood vessels from bursting under stress. Also, like Ayurveda, it relieves pressure in your intestines. However, the right dosage may vary from person to person, so an Ayurvedic physician should be consulted before taking Shilajit in the treatment of hemorrhoids.*

Benefits of Shilajit for Men:
Studies show that Shilajit can be used in the treatment of oligospermia. In a group of 60 men, 100 grams of Shilajit capsules administered twice daily for a period of 90 days resulted in an increase in total red blood cells with higher levels of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH, a male sex hormone, responsible for sperm production).

In yet another study, Shilajit was found to increase testosterone and other related male hormone levels. Hence, Shilajit has potential as a remedy for male sexual problems.

Shilajit has antioxidant properties:
Processed Shilajit is an excellent antioxidant. Chemical studies suggest that purified shilajit is a better antioxidant than raw shilajit. The fulvic acid and vitamin component in Shilajit is the major antioxidant present in Shilajit. These compounds neutralize free radicals present in the body and help reduce oxidative stress.

Shilajit for problems at high places:
If you have ever traveled to a hill station, you may have noticed problems like slight difficulty in breathing or ringing in the ears. These changes are due to mountain sickness, which is caused by the pressure and environmental conditions of high altitude. Other symptoms include nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, stomach problems, anorexia, cough, malaise, dizziness, and fatigue. For the elderly and sick, mountain sickness has very serious symptoms such as loss of appetite, stomach pain, muscle cramps, etc.

According to research conducted in India, Shilajit is a one-stop solution for problems associated with altitude sickness. Studies suggest that Shilajit is rich in fulvic acid (a chemical compound) and other minerals, which provide relief from problems such as cold and hypoxia. Also, Shilajit acts as a tonic for the body, which ensures proper functioning of the body organs. Also, taking Shilajit relieves symptoms of stress and anxiety at high altitudes. Finally, as a diuretic, Shilajit removes excess fluid from the lungs thus acting as a reliever from pulmonary edema (accumulation of fluid in the lungs).*

Shilajit for Alzheimer’s:
Alzheimer’s is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by symptoms of dementia and loss of cognition (ability to pay attention). In Ayurveda, Shilajit is combined with certain herbs to treat anxiety, mood swings, irritability, depression, etc. Used for problems commonly associated with Alzheimer’s.

Recent studies suggest that Shilajit may be effective in relieving Alzheimer’s symptoms and slowing the progression of the disease. It was further suggested that the fulvic acid in Shilajit stops the accumulation of tau protein, which is a natural protein present in the brain, but in excess can cause neurodegenerative disorders. However, more studies are needed to understand the actual mechanism and effects of Shilajit in human Alzheimer’s cases.*

How to use Shilajit?
Shilajit is commonly used in resin or powder form and is also available in capsules, tablets, oils, creams and beauty products. Shilajit syrups and liquids are commercially available in the market.

Quantity of Shilajit.
Ideally, 300-500 milligrams of Shilajit should be consumed daily without any significant side effects. Ayurvedic physicians suggest taking 1-3 drops of liquid shilajit with milk to experience the health benefits. The actual amount and duration of Shilajit varies, depending on the person’s age and physical condition. Therefore, it is best to consult an Ayurvedic expert to determine the right shilajit dose for you.

Co-effect of Shilajit:
Though Shilajit has many health benefits, there are some precautions you should know, viz,

Raw Shilajit is considered unfit for human consumption, but it is rich in some minerals. Raw Shilajit can be infected by fungi like Aspergillus. Shilajit should always be used in its processed form. Like doctors, thalassemia patients should avoid shilajit as it is rich in iron. However, there is no information available on the safety of Shilajit for pregnant women. Thus, if you are pregnant, you are advised to check with an ob-gyn before taking Shilajit. According to Ayurvedic doctors, Shilajit should not be taken if you suffer from gout, as it increases uric acid levels. (Read more: High Uric Acid in Blood) Also, if you are already using prescribed medications, it is important to speak to an Ayurvedic physician before taking any form of Shilajit, to ensure that it does not interfere with your treatment.
